New electric SUV: Byton reports 60,000 pre-orders

The future lies in electromobility: At the technology fair CES, automaker Byton announces the first figures for the new SUV with a mega display. Competitor Bisker, on the other hand, is launching a new model – with solar cells on the roof.

The electric car manufacturer Byton, whose trademark is a huge display in the cockpit, has now received 60,000 reservations for its first model. That’s what co-founder and boss Daniel Kirchert said at the CES technology fair in Las Vegas.

Byton plans to build the M-Byte SUV in China in the middle of summer and initially launch it there. The start in the USA and Europe is planned for 2021. Byton manager Andreas Schaaf said in Las Vegas that there are already agreements with car dealerships and other infrastructure providers for the European market. These include many trading partners who sold vehicles from established premium manufacturers.

Byton wants to stir up the premium SUV market with a price of $ 45,000 or euros before tax. However, other players are now sometimes setting their price marks even lower. The electric car pioneer Tesla wants to sell its pickup model Cybertruck for just under $ 40,000.

Competitor Fisker announced an SUV model with solar cells in the roof for $ 37,500 in Las Vegas. According to CEO Elon Musk, Tesla has now received over 140,000 reservations for the cyber truck. A lower price limit is set by the battery costs alone, Schaaf emphasized. “Nobody can do magic.”

Byton wants to stand out from the competition with the almost door-to-door display with a diagonal of 47 inches (just under 120 cm) and digital services. To do this, the company must convince app developers to adapt their applications for the vehicles. For this purpose, a developer platform was launched in Las Vegas on Sunday (local time).
