New Drug Promises Hope in Treating Alzheimer’s: A Turning Point in the Fight Against the Disease

Important step in treating a terrible disease. A new drug is considered a turning point in the fight against Alzheimer’s, a disease from which many Romanians also suffer. In clinical trials, the drug slowed down the deterioration of the brain, and the results are spectacular if administered in the early stages of the disease.

Constanța Ionescu has a husband suffering from Alzheimer’s for seven years and every day is a trial. “I give him a bath, I shave him because he is no longer able, I feel like I am dying, I can no longer and we are alone. I also have my health problems and it is very difficult, very difficult”, declared Constanța Ionescu. The news of a new drug gives him a little hope. “May God grant that he comes faster if he comes. I look at him as he loses himself day by day”, declared Constanţa Ionescu.

Alzheimer’s disease can be diagnosed 10-15 years before the first symptoms appear

Scientists have announced that they have made a discovery that could change the fate of millions of people: a new drug that could make Alzheimer’s just a memory. “The main achievement was the slowing of the disease by 35% after the 18-month trial period. For patients in the early stages of the disease, a more significant improvement of 40% to 60% was observed,” said David Ricks, CEO of the drug company .

Researchers who have studied the effects of the monoclonal antibody drug say that it works only in patients suffering from Alzheimer’s, not for those who have another type of dementia. “It is certainly a turning point. These beta-amyloid conglomerates that block neurons and ultimately cause neuronal death. Or these drugs from the class of monoclonal antibodies help to dilute this beta-amyloid,” said Adrian Stănescu, gerontologist.

Alzheimer’s disease can be diagnosed 10-15 years before the first symptoms appear, through specific investigations. “Cortical and cerebral atrophy appears, practically part of the neurons have died.

At the beginning, patients can manage, but the more the disease progresses, the more difficult it is for them to manage daily activities, even personal hygiene,” said Teodora Dascălu, psychiatrist. More than 200,000 Romanians are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and those involved in the care of these patients are around one million.
