New diagnostic procedure provides quick answers about animal disease outbreak

Wageningen Bioveterinary Research has a diagnostic procedure in which outbreaks of viral diseases in livestock farming can be characterized more quickly and efficiently using molecular techniques. In this procedure, four consecutive tests are performed in succession.

Sometimes there are persistent symptoms of disease on a livestock farm without the usual symptoms of known animal diseases. On that, the diagnostic procedures with a series of consecutive tests can provide a definitive answer. It makes it possible for the government to take faster and more targeted measures.

A list of 117 animal diseases has been drawn up by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). A notification obligation applies to 32 of these in the Netherlands. In the event of possible outbreaks, various tests are available for all these diseases that can be performed sequentially and quickly determine whether an animal is actually infected.
