New Covid variant: the symptoms of Centaurus, the most contagious mutation of Omicron

The new wave of Covid is leaving very high numbers of infections between vaccinated people and patients previously infected with Omicron or other variants. This explosion of cases is due, in part, to the expansion of the new variants BA.4 and BA.5, predominant in our country.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is constantly evolving and this means that every so often new, increasingly contagious mutations are detected. Thus, recently there have been cases of a new subvariant of Omicron that the WHO has dubbed as Centaurus.

What is known of Centaurus

Information on Centaurus is still limited, as the first cases were detected on June 30 in India. It was then that the virologist at the Department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London, Tom Peacockreported that this new subvariant of Ómicron has 45 common mutations with BA.5 and 15 particular ones.

Experts also point out that Transmits five times faster than other Omicron strains -due to the mutations that affect the spike of the virus- and could have a vaccine leak.

Which countries has Centaurus reached?

Most cases of Centaurus have been recorded in India, but this new variant is already present in eight countries and is expect it to continue to expand throughout the world. Thus, for the moment, Centaurus has been located in the following places:

  • Germany
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • USA
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • United Kingdom

Symptoms of Centaurus

As for the symptoms, and in the absence of further research in this regard, these would be Similar to those of the rest of Omicron’s lineages.

Among the most common are fever, asthenia or fatigue, headache and cough. However, in the latest subvariants of Ómicron BA.4 and BA.5 some different signs have been detected, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or severe sore throat.
