The current publication was preceded by a report from a child of an infected mother who had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 36 hours after birth, according to a report from “Lancet”. This report had raised concerns that intrauterine transmission might be possible. Senior author of the study, Professor Dr. Yuanzhen Zhang, however, emphasizes that important clinical details are not known on this one case, and therefore it cannot be concluded that transmission in the womb is possible. “Nevertheless, we should pay special attention to newborn babies from mothers with COVID-19 pneumonia to prevent infections in this group,” Zhang said in the message.
