New call for a demonstration “No to no place, Justice and Reparation” has

This Saturday, May 28, 2022, in Le Lamentin, around fifty organizations are announcing a major demonstration against the dismissal announced in the investigation into the poisoning of Martinique’s land with chlordecone, a carcinogenic pesticide.

Members of trade union, political, associative and cultural organizations want to send a strong message to the government on the occasion of this new event scheduled for Saturday May 28, 2022 from 9 a.m. Place du Nèg Mawon in Le Lamentin.

Closing the chlordecone file without further action is unacceptable for the Martinican population.

Chlordecone, a pesticide banned in the United States since 1975 because of its toxicity, was used in France until 1990. And it was only in 1993 that the product was withdrawn from sale in Martinique.

The preliminary investigation opened by a complaint lodged in 2006 by several West Indian associations has just been closed. The delay is in itself a scandal (15 years of investigation into facts that occurred between 1972 and 1993), and all this to claim no indictment, which announces a probable dismissal.

In Martinique, lands, rivers, coastal seas and people have been poisoned by chlordecone, “an endocrine disrupting pesticide“ recalls in particular Doctor Jos Pélage (Medical Association for the Protection of the Environment and Health).

Since 2021, voices have been raised against an announced dismissal.

Today, during this election period, several organizations in Martinique are announcing their determination to be heard. For them, the chlordecone scandal is a state crime, and “there can be no prescription”.

The President of the Association of Mayors (AMM) calls on all the mayors of Martinique to take part in the “Justice and Reparation” demonstration organized on May 28, 2022 in Lamentin. In a personal capacity, and in his capacity as Mayor of Lorrain, the President of the AMM reaffirms his full support for all peaceful initiatives that will bring to light the truth about the heinous acts that led to the poisoning of Martiniquans and their Lands. A massive mobilization of municipal authorities will show the commitment of mayors alongside the entire Martinican population in its fight for the manifestation of the truth against poisoning with the pesticide chlordecone.
