New American football club in the Ore Mountains! This is where the “miners” train!

There is now an American football club in the Ore Mountains. TAG24 was present at the first training session of the “Miners”.

Annaberg-Buchholz – Im Erzgebirge American football is actually played now! The “Miners” (dt: Mine workers) want to establish clubs within the next few years Chemnitz or Leipzig Compete. TAG24 was present at the new club’s first training session.

After warming up (stretching, sprinting, coordinating legs, push-ups), 17 young people (8 to 17 years of age) train the basics of “offense” (attack) and “defense” (defense) – the current Corona- Protection Ordinance allows sport in groups of up to 20 people under the age of 18.

Coach Tom Weinert (27) shows his boys how to move on the field and catch the ball.

“Everyone is highly motivated. I didn’t think that so many would come, I’ve already discovered a few talents,” said the coach happily.

Tom Weinert played with the “Leipzig Hawks” until 2020.

“In autumn 2020 I moved to the Ore Mountains with my wife and wanted to quit football. But I quickly realized that I missed the sport.”

The professional soldier then founded the first football club in his new home.

Carpenter trainee Lukas Sommerfeld (17) is happy: “The training was fun, but it was also exhausting. I am a fan of the ‘Los Angeles Rams’ and regularly watch the US professional league NFL.”

Student Florian Pemsel (14) is also enthusiastic, although he has never played American football or seen it on television before: “I like to try something new.”

Weinert is only waiting for the district court to officially register the association and is still looking for fellow campaigners.

“Above all, we need strong boys who have protective and hunting instincts. We also need coaches and referees.”
