“I’m working on a reprise of A2 Racer, as well as RedCat,” says Wolterbeek-Muller in a special episode of All in the Game, which can be listened to from Thursday, November 30. The co-founder of the games division of software company Davilex, which was itself acquired by Visma in 2017, spoke about this at the Davilex Games Day at the Dutch Institute for Sound and Vision. There, the heritage of the former game development and publishing division of Davilex was extensively discussed.

A2 Racer is one of the best-known game series from the Netherlands, in which you race on replica roads and highways from your own country. Numerous editions were published, as well as international versions focused on Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The series was successful with millions of copies sold, but with the abundance of new parts and derivatives, Davilex Games itself flooded the market, Wolterbeek-Muller himself explains in the podcast.

Yet he now believes the time is ripe for a new edition of A2 Racer. As well as RedCat, the series about an adventurous cat that became best known for its later, educational games. ‘Nostalgia creates cycles, just look at what is returning now. I still feel like I want to release a good A2 Racer that I am completely satisfied with. But I won’t tell you yet when you will hear more about this.’

Wolterbeek-Muller also looks at new possibilities in the field of artificial intelligence for the development of new games, for example for creating digital models. ‘Thanks to AI, you will soon be able to do the same work with five people as you previously did with eighty people. The costs and human factor can be greatly reduced if you set up an AI game studio. The existing, ‘legacy’ development studios have a huge problem.’
