Tonight, at midnight (French time), the veil will be lifted on the first functional Neuralink implant prototype. This is the promise made by the founder of the start-up, Elon Musk, a few days ago. The event should be able to be followed directly on Neuralink’s official website or on the company’s YouTube channel. A link to the live webcast of the conference will be released in the coming hours, according to Neuralink’s official Twitter account (below).

Elon Musk’s intention is to present the first operational brain-machine interface. At the moment, the technology is still in its infancy. We should not immediately expect to see a first implanted ordering his smartphone by thought. Today’s demonstration will simply be to prove that it is possible to emit a Bluetooth signal at each neuronal discharge, in real time. Tiny wires clad with electrodes are implanted directly into the brain of an awake individual. These wires then meet in a small box implanted behind the ear. Finally, it reflects brain activity and therefore transmits the result via Bluetooth. Elon Musk would also have promised to present the new version of the machine intended to implant the device in the human brain. If the project seems simply thought to improve our brain capacities, the official objective of Neuralink is first of all to help overcome certain neurodegenerative pathologies and to better control certain hormonal balances. Last July, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX nevertheless confirmed that the Neuralink implant will not only have medical virtues.
