Neuchâtel: resumption of school by half-class

Deconfinement

Following the Federal Council’s announcements, the cantons will decide on the various measures concerning the question of schools.

Half of the pupils in cycles 1 and 2 will go to school in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

Resumption of face-to-face teaching at compulsory school will be done by half-class alternately in the morning and in the afternoon in the canton of Neuchâtel for cycles 1 and 2 until May 25. Cycle 3 students will return to class on this date.

“We have chosen a gradual recovery, as in all the cantons of Western Switzerland, to ensure that the protection of the person takes precedence,” explained Neuchâtel State Councilor Monika Maire-Hefti on Thursday. Vulnerable students and teachers will continue to study and work remotely. The class of the latter will be assumed by substitutes.

Teachers at risk represent around 10% of the workforce. “It is a major challenge to replace all these people,” added the head of the Department of Education and Family. Wearing a mask is not recommended but if “it gives a certain security to a teacher, it will be tolerated,” she explained.

Class closure possible

Within the classes, many hygiene rules will be put in place. The distance between students is not fixed at 2m but it will be between adults and between adult and students, if possible. Teachers can wear visors provided by the school with very young pupils whom they must approach.

If several Covid-19 patients are detected in the same college, a decision to close a class can be taken by the management after notice from the cantonal doctor.

To ensure the revival of the economy, the functioning of the reception structures will try to respond as closely as possible to parents’ wishes from May 11, explained Monika Maire-Hefti.

Vaud: written maturity exams canceled

The canton of Vaud announced Thursday that it was removing written maturity exams due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Federal Council had left the cantons the freedom to decide on this issue on Thursday.

Like the other cantons, Vaud had already decided to abolish the oral maturity exams. “In principle, there will be no written final exams for gymnastic and professional maturity,” Cesla Amarelle, head of the Department of Training, Youth and Culture (DFJC), told the press.

Students who met the criteria for obtaining maturity with the marks obtained until March 13 will obtain their title. Catch-up tests will be organized next August for those who did not have the required marks and who would have the mathematical possibility of catching up. “Borderline cases will be treated in a kind and broad manner,” she said.

The precise conditions for promotion and certification will be communicated soon, she said. The same goes for health measures concerning this post-compulsory secondary II school, which is scheduled to resume on June 8. The Vaud Council of State had already approved last Friday the cancellation of the final exams of the certificate of end of secondary studies (11th year). (nxp / ats)
