Netirās Cilpas: The Debut Album “Melnezer’s Book” by Latvian Beatmaker Duo Anša and Kārlis Kolmani

Beatmaker duo “Netirās Cilpas” is a duo of brothers Anša and Kārlis Kolmani. If these surnames do not mean anything to someone, then it should be explained that Ansis Kolmanis is the same Ansis of Latvian hip-hop No. 1 at the moment, but Kārlis is known by the stage name 181h. “Melnezer’s book” is their debut album, and a substantial one at that – with a total of 21 tracks, which are performed by a hard-to-count and impenetrable bunch of rappers: Wiesulis, Marko, Hotte, Xantikvariāts, 3adatu stagars, “Riekstu armija” (Edavārdi, Archijs, ansis), Arturs Skutelis, Ozols, I Mean Love, PCK97, Kjuumanis, Kurts, Kapelmeistars Group, “Ausmeņa Records” (Bruolāns, Ługa, Kvāps), EV, Kaisers, Pionieris, Eliots, Steps, roland če, MC Apšaude, Ods, Gotcha, Melicol, Amanito, og Montecarlo and Flabby. It should also be added that Elvijs Graftsov, the leader of “Very Cool People”, played the guitar in the songs “Kreiļa erocis” and “Zenītā”.

Currently, this record is already circulating on music streaming services, but it was primarily released as a limited edition 12-inch vinyl record that could be purchased at the band’s concert at the Palladium on November 11.

The Kolmani brothers emphasize that “Melnezer’s book” is a conceptually unusual record for the rap genre, because the authors of this album are not the authors of the lyrics, but the creators of the music or beats, many of the rappers being guest artists.

Working with such projects as “Läzeri”, PKI, “Riekstu armija” etc., ansis and 181h have been the authors of many different rap songs that are considered underground classics in the last fifteen years. In 2011, the brothers united under the name “Dirty Loops” in order to give their sound a recognizable identity “and to draw the rap audience’s attention to artists whose names were practically never mentioned in rap songs at the time, that is, the creators of music or beats.” Therefore, “Melnezer’s Book” can be considered a kind of handwritten catalog of both beatmakers, but it gives the listeners the opportunity to taste the great diversity that currently reigns in the rapidly growing domestic rap scene in a concentrated way.

It must be said that this “tasting opportunity” is considered the biggest plus of the album – here you can get a brief insight into the special sounds of many rappers. Despite the fact that the authors of the beats are the same, for example, do not confuse the “freestyler” Wiesuli (song “Mego gambit”) with the militant Ozola (“OGMC”), the same ansi in collaboration with Arturas Skutel (“Shirts on the ceiling”) – with ” pajoligo” Kapelmeistars Group (“Hip-hop beat”), Latvians from “Ausmeņa Records” (song “SiSiDra 5000”) – with the men of “Banda Banda” Xantikvariata, Stepa and roland če (“Banda Taxi”) or the delicate Kurta and I Mean Love (“Left-handed weapon”) etc.

The song “Prasīgais klusums” (EV and Kaizers) is especially catchy, but the best explanation of the creation of “Melnezer’s book” could be offered as “Anša beat”, which Ansis joined together with Melikola. On the other hand, residents of streaming services and mobile phones will probably like “Apd***ies” (Nut Army, Ozols) best – an absolute product of these times. The lyrics in the album are, of course, a separate story – there are many pearls here. In general, “Melnezer’s Book” sounds like a selection of rap’s best songs, but it’s hard to agree with yourself whether it’s a plus or a minus.
