Earlier, about four years ago, we laughed at the companies GAC and JAC, which simultaneously decided to enter the Russian market: there should be no confusion! Now JAC has become an important technological partner for the Russian passenger car and truck industry, although I remember the previous crossovers of this brand as one of the most unsuccessful among the Chinese. And GAC is still a rarity here: the dealer network is modest, car deliveries are irregular, and spare parts – for example, brake pads – are not yet available at all. And why then bother with the large GAC GS8 crossover if there is an understandable Exeed VX?

PProduced by the state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. I’ve always found her quite attractive. It was either advertising with Basta’s participation or mature cubism of forms that influenced it, but the first GAC GS8 (or Trumpchi GS8 on the Chinese market) did not look conservative and calm in the Chinese way. The change of generations did not affect this impression.

The cabin has a huge screen in the center, original instrument design and unexpected sea green leatherette. The front is relaxed: leaning on the wide armrest and looking at the spacious hood dish through the windshield, you feel like the owner of a large frame SUV.

But an inspection on the frame lift did not reveal that it was a classic crossover with a monocoque body, McPherson struts at the front and an original multi-link at the rear. The generous treatment with anti-corrosion mastic is the work of the owner Andrey, but Gakis come from China with bare metal. A transversely mounted two-liter turbo engine, on the decorative cover of which “Mega Wave Power” is written, is mated to a classic eight-speed Aisin automatic transmission. By the way, this gearbox is the first and only conceptual difference between the GS8 and the Exceed, which is equipped with a “robot” with two clutches.
