Neighboring France: The City of Geneva goes to war against the future Chablais highway – News Geneva: Greater Geneva

The Administrative Council of the City of Geneva does not want to hear of the motorway project which must link the border town of Machilly to Thonon-Les-Bains in Haute-Savoie. The Executive has decided, learned from the “Tribune de Genève”, to mandate the Huglo-Lepage law firm (one of the founding members of which is none other than the former French Minister of the Environment Corinne Lepage) to oppose this future motorway link.

As a reminder, this project has just been declared of public utility on December 24th by a decree of the French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe. This 16.5 km section should open up the French Chablais, which today has little transport infrastructure.

Barely decreed, already disputed. Why? According to Philippe d’Espine, in charge of information for the Administrative Council, the college judges that this new infrastructure would be in “unfair competition” with the Léman Express. “It is a collegial decision,” he specifies, recalling that the Administrative Council delegated this file to Rémy Pagani to follow it up.

To better understand this project: “The highway to Thonon defies Swiss reluctance”

If many local elected officials as well as the president of the department of Haute-Savoie Christian Monteil support this project, others worry about it. Associations have made their voices heard against this new infrastructure, criticizing the “all highway” and nuisance, according to remarks reported by the radio France Bleu. Two weeks ago, the association “Inspire” in Haute-Savoie denounced “a climaticide gift”, just as “the Léman Express had just opened the way to sustainable mobility and another future in Haute-Savoie “.
