Nearly 500,000 Casualties Reported in Ukrainian and Russian Forces Since Start of War

The New York Times reported, on Friday, quoting unnamed US officials, that the number of casualties among the Ukrainian and Russian forces since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022 is close to 500,000.

The newspaper said that the losses among the Russian forces are close to 300 thousand, including up to 120 thousand dead and between 170 and 180 thousand injured.

She added that the death toll on the Ukrainian side is close to 70,000, while the number of injured ranges between 100 and 120,000, after nearly a year and a half of war.

The newspaper said, “US officials have warned that it is still difficult to estimate the number of casualties accurately, because Moscow has often reduced the number of dead and wounded in the war, and Kiev has not disclosed official figures.”

The New York Times quoted officials as saying that the number of victims rose after Ukraine launched a counterattack earlier this year.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian army announced gains in its counterattack against Russian forces on the southeastern front, and Kiev said its forces had liberated a village, the first success of its kind since July 27, indicating the challenge the forces face in advancing through heavily mined Russian defensive lines without Strong air support.

Ukrainian officials have not yet responded to Reuters requests for comment, and Russia has not yet commented on the report.
