NBA Introduces New Football Rule with Potential Impact on MLS and Other Leagues

The NBA has introduced a new rule in football, which will be beneficial to various other leagues if implemented.

This rule stipulates that the time available for any player to leave the field when he is substituted is set at 10 seconds, and if this is not met, his team will have to play minus one player for at least 60 seconds before completing the substitution.

The newspaper “Mundo Deportivo” said that this new regulation was approved by the MLS Owners Council, and is scheduled to be implemented starting in the 2024 season, with some exceptions to the timing of exit such as injuries and goalkeeper replacements.

She noted that this rule was successfully tested in the last MLS NEXT Pro season, where 99.7% of 3,200 substitutions were completed in 10 seconds or less.

There will be some other changes, such as the appearance of stoppage time added by the referee on the stadium boards, in addition to announcing video technology decisions via loudspeakers.
