Status: 07/19/2023 07:43 a.m

At noon, the task force supply company (EGV) “Frankfurt am Main” sets off towards the Aegean. There, the crew of the naval ship supports a NATO mission against human smuggling.

At 1:30 p.m., the EGV “Frankfurt am Main” leaves its home port and, under the command of Commander Hanno Weisensee, sets course for the north-eastern Mediterranean. As part of the Standing Nato Maritime Group 2 (SNMG 2), the crew in the Aegean works together with the Turkish and Greek coast guards and the European Coast Guard and Border Protection Agency.

Task force to collect information on smugglers

“The ‘NATO Support Aegean’ mission is of great importance to us. After an extensive repair phase and the gradual operational training of the crew, we are satisfied that we can once again fulfill our actual mission,” said Commander Weisensee. It is the task of the crew, as part of this mission, “to contribute to the gathering of information and the development of a situational picture with regard to migration movements and smuggling activities.”

Medical staff support the crew

In addition to the permanent crew on board the “Frankfurt am Main”, there are additional personnel on the German warship – including the staff and additional medical personnel. Crew members from the sister ship “Bonn” also complete the crew. During the course of the mission, Turkish and Greek liaison officers and Frontex officials will also board the German warship.

Mission has been running since 2016

On the initiative of Greece, Turkey and Germany, the NATO defense ministers decided in 2016 to contribute to European measures against human smuggling in the Aegean. The ships do not take active action against smugglers, but monitor the situation in the Aegean and provide information on smuggler activities. The “Frankfurt am Main” is expected to return to Wilhelmshaven in November.
