Naughty Dog Cancels The Last of Us Online Multiplayer Spin-Off Game: Official Statement and Future Plans

During the night from Thursday to Friday, the developers from the Naughty Dog studio brought two important pieces of information regarding the multiplayer spin-off game The Last of Us. First of all, we learned that the project was called quite simply The Last of Us Online. But the second, much more important news is that the project has been cancelled. This is not a completely surprising news, if we take into account the information from May this year, when in connection with the postponement of the release, it was first openly talked about that the emerging game is having problems. However, in mid-November, game director Vinit Agarwal not-so-cryptically commented on his Twitter that he’s still working on that game and the players once again had hope of winning the title. Unfortunately, according to the official opinion, that will not happen.

“We realize that many of you have been waiting for new information about the project we call The Last of Us Online. But there is no easy way to tell. We have made an extremely difficult decision and have ended the development of the project,” the developers say in their statement official website. “We know this will be very difficult for many of you, especially the dedicated community around The Last of Us Factions, who news of [nové] multiplayer game carefully,” the developers add and confirm that the information is overwhelming for them as well. Nevertheless, they want to share with the players some more news about the development of the game and the reasons that ultimately led to the fact that the title will not reach the fans in the end.

“The multiplayer team was already working on the pre-production game during the development of The Last of Us Part II,” reveal the people at Naughty Dog. They describe that the game had huge potential in their eyes with elaborate gameplay and a very satisfying vision. But then the development went into full swing and the studio quickly began to realize that the bold plans seemed to outgrow its capabilities. “In order to support The Last of Us Online, we would have to spend all our resources on it for several years,” the developers explain. Thus, they found themselves at a crossroads where they had to choose between two mutually dysfunctional paths – to become exclusively a studio that newly provides support for the title’s live-service, or to continue to focus on single-player story games that are a direct part of the studio’s DNA. And as you already understood, in the end the second option won.

“We are extremely proud of all the studio staff who participated in this project. The knowledge and investment in technology from this game will carry over to the way we develop our projects,” the developers add. At the very end, they confirm that they are working on at least two very ambitious games and that they will share the news when the time is right. At this point, it can be recalled that at least one of the emerging projects is brand new, while the other can only be speculated about. Very often there were hints that the studio was thinking about a third part of The Last of Us, also because of the success of the series adaptation. However, Neil Druckmann’s statement from this July was unclear and it is therefore not entirely clear what the second project is.
