NATO Secretary General Optimistic About US Congress Approving New Aid for Ukraine

I am encouraged by the prospect that the US Congress will approve new aid to Ukraine in the coming days, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today at a press conference at the alliance’s headquarters with the Prime Ministers of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, Denmark. Mette Frederiksen and the Czech Republic’s Peter Fiala, reports BTA.

We discussed an increase in aid to Ukraine, especially the air defense (air defense) fund, Stoltenberg said. The situation on the battlefield in Ukraine is very difficult, we clearly hear the calls of the Ukrainians for more help, he said. In response to a question, the Secretary General explained that there are less than 100 air defense systems in Europe, but that the alliance has more than that number, especially in the United States.

Prime Minister Fiala said that he expected Washington’s new aid to Ukraine to be approved by Congress by the end of this week or next week. He clarified that this expectation is based on his talks in the US, where he has just returned. Fiala suggested that the delivery of half a million shells, provided by an initiative with Prague, in which other friends are also involved, will begin in June.

The Europeans have done a lot for Ukraine so far, but more is needed, said Prime Minister Frederiksen. According to her, part of the European air defense systems should be sent to the side of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Rutte noted that allies were needed to produce more air defense assets. According to him, Ukraine should continue to receive weapons and equipment from the stockpiles of NATO countries and buy additional weapons from the world defense market.
