“The alliance has agreed on three elements to bring Ukraine closer to NATO. First, a program to facilitate the transition from Soviet times to NATO standards. Help rebuild Ukraine’s security and defense sector and provide the country with its basic needs – fuel and medical equipment. New NATO – Council of Ukraine to consult, make decisions and solve crisis issues. There we will meet as equals,” Stoltenberg said.

“Thirdly, we confirm that Ukraine will become a NATO member state. We have agreed to cancel the action plan for NATO membership. This will change Ukraine’s path to membership from a two-step to a one-step process,” the Secretary General emphasized.

Stoltenberg explained that Ukraine will become a member state when the allies unanimously agree to it among themselves, as well as Kyiv fulfills all the prerequisites that the alliance will have set.

On the other hand, referring to the resources devoted to defense, Stoltenberg announced that the member states have committed to devoting at least 2% of their GDP to defense, which the alliance had defined as optimal until now.

“Delphi” previously reported that this is already the second NATO summit that has taken place since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It will take place in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, from the 11th to the 12th. for July. This time, a lot of attention was paid to issues related to Ukraine, Sweden’s admission to NATO, the alliance’s defense plans, as well as the GDP spent on defense.
