From the large number of applications, 45 finalists were selected, divided into three categories: Human, Animal and Landscape. In three categories you could compete for the highest prize: a publication in National Geographic Magazine. Like every year, the final judgment was given by a jury of professionals, made up of: Robbert Vermue, Jan Dirk van Der Burg, Sacha de Boer and Lieve Blancquaert.

More information on the winning photo: Collision between man and animal

At the Avolare wildlife refuge in Doorweth, injured wild animals are treated and then released as quickly as possible. In the photo, the wings of a jackdaw are being checked for fractures. “You can’t see him, but you know he’s with some kind of doctor trying to save him, the jackdaw’s gaze is skeptical. This makes the image exciting, the image is also very exciting, he looks so grumpy and you have drama.’ says the jury. “It subtly tells a bigger story: that of the vulnerability of birds and our relationship with nature.”
