“National Bank of Romania Allows Exchange of Used and Damaged Banknotes”

More and more Romanians choose to deposit their money on a card and give up cash, but there is also a category of people who cannot adapt to technology or simply do not want to take this step. For these people, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) made an important announcement. It refers to the money you have in your house and that you need to get rid of urgently.

In a press release from the NBR, it was emphasized that used, damaged, torn or non-circulating banknotes should be removed from circulation. This measure is aimed at improving the quality of currency in circulation, as well as increasing the efficiency of the banking system. In addition, the disposal of these notes can prevent possible problems caused by the use of money.

Where you can replace used and damaged banknotes

Whether it is a used, torn or damaged banknote, anyone who wants to exchange them can do so at the NBR, without paying any additional costs.

Banknotes that are assessed as unfit for circulation cannot be recirculated. Used, damaged and uncirculated banknotes are included in this category“, the BNR press release states.

In addition, you can replace used banknotes not only at the BNR offices. Some banks also offer this service, and even more, if you have coins or notes taken out of circulation at home, now is the right time to exchange them.

For exchange to be accepted by public institutions, the money must contain all the identifying elements, including the series and number printed on the back of the banknote. If, for example, too large a piece of a banknote is missing, the exchange will not be possible.

The BNR offices are located in the following cities:

  • Bucharest
  • Cluj
  • Timisoara
  • IASI
  • Constant
  • Dolj

Used banknotes are divided into the following denominations categories, according to the BNR:

  • Banknotes that contain the series and number printed on their backs are the banknote’s identifiers.
  • Banknotes that are damaged, torn or cut but retain the banknote’s main features and legible identifiers.
  • Banknotes that are stained, discolored, soiled or wrinkled but have complete identification.

“The BNR ensures the replacement on demand, without taxes and commissions, of Romanian banknotes and coins, issued and not withdrawn from circulation, which have worn out or become unfit for monetary circulation. The monetary tokens presented are refunded in full (100% of the value), even if they present deficiencies, within the legal limits allowed, but only under the conditions in which they can be identified without reservations. The monetary signs that are missing more than 40% of the surface or that do not present all the identification elements cannot be reimbursed to the applicant”, according to the statement.
