National Assembly Transformed into Historic Public Square for Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France

A historic atmosphere reigns since Thursday in the place of the National Assembly in Quebec, enough for forget about it the present time while the place was converted into a public square on the occasion of the 26e edition of the Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France.

The site was also crowded in the early afternoon of Saturday because of its many activities carefully combining entertainment and history.

To the Aboriginal traditions, including historical tales and small adventure courses, we must add the passionate visitors, who with the finesse of their period costume, also contribute to making the event a real immersion in the heart Of the history.

“We are really happy. The public square works wonderfully, even if it overflows. The people are there, they are passionate and in addition they are extremely good humored so we could not ask for better”, underlines the director of programming, Jérôme Deschênes.

Since this is the first time that said public square has been set up near the National Assembly, Mr. Deschênes says he is particularly happy to see that it has the desired effect, allowing much more latitude due to its area.

Passionate actors

If the smiles were so numerous and the laughter so strong on the site, it is undoubtedly due to the masterful work carried out by the many actors who lend themselves to the game.

These include Jean-Philippe Marcotte, better known as Baptiste, who every year since 1999 has brought history to life for visitors in a completely different way.

“It’s more than a job, it’s a passion. It allows me to personify the story through characters and bring it to life for different clienteles”, launches the one who is a historical popularizer by profession.

For a 24th edition, it is through Baptiste that he tells stories as interesting as each other. Even if he is not a specific character in the story, this allows him to explore different universes each year.

“I was a Jesuit, a resident, a barber-surgeon, I spoke about the manufacture of alcohol, I really did several jobs, but always being a Baptist”, he underlined.

“I’ve been here so long I’m in the league of the old stove. People are starting to know me so it’s certain that if I’m somewhere, I’m going to be a Baptist,” concluded Mr. Marcotte, laughing before returning to talk about hydraulic power with his audience.
