In an interview with Vanity Fair for its annual Hollywood issue, Portman expressed uncertainty about whether AI poses a threat to her livelihood. She acknowledged that AI is an intriguing form of technology that will continue to exist and evolve, but she also admitted that there is a possibility she may not have a job in the future.
When asked about how she plans to deal with the concerns surrounding AI, Portman simply stated, “We’ll figure it out when it happens, I guess.” Her response reflects the uncertainty many individuals in the entertainment industry feel about the potential consequences of AI’s advancement.
Portman is not alone in her worries. Ricky Schroder, best known for his role in “Silver Spoons,” recently spoke with Fox News Digital about his concerns regarding AI-generated pornography. While acknowledging that he is not an expert on AI, Schroder expressed his belief that creating pornographic images using AI technology is a dangerous path to pursue.
Similarly, Candace Cameron Bure, the chief content officer of Great American Family, expressed her reservations about AI in filmmaking. Bure stated that she has no intention of using AI to make movies on her channel. She finds the concept of AI in filmmaking frightening and prefers to rely on talented writers to create scripts for their movies.
On the other hand, some Hollywood stars are more curious and open-minded about the potential of AI. Howie Mandel, a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” shared his enthusiasm for embracing the technology. Mandel believes that as long as individuals have ownership and control over their images and materials, there should be no problem with AI. He compared the advancement of AI to the impact television had on the entertainment industry, emphasizing its transformative potential.
AI has also sparked division within Hollywood, particularly during the actors’ and writers’ strikes last year. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) negotiated regulations regarding the use of AI in writing and creating digital replicas of performers. The WGA stated that AI cannot write or rewrite literary material and that AI-generated material cannot be used to undermine a writer’s credit or separated rights. SAG-AFTRA ensured that performers must give consent for the creation of digital replicas and be compensated for the time they would have otherwise worked in person.
As AI continues to advance, its impact on Hollywood remains uncertain. While some express concerns about potential threats to job security and ethical dilemmas, others see it as an opportunity for innovation and creative exploration. As Natalie Portman aptly put it, AI is “another form that’s going to exist, which is always interesting for art.” Only time will reveal the true extent of AI’s influence on the entertainment industry.
