The computer operating the Hubble telescope has crashed.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON — NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope entered its fourth day Wednesday (16/6) after its engine experienced computer problems. Technological problems have brought all astronomical observations to a standstill and rendered the observatory temporarily inoperative.
The computer in question dates back to the 1980s and is responsible for controlling the science instruments inside the telescope.
Reported in Newsweek, Thursday (17/6) explained, the computer was not active on Sunday (13/6). Corrupt memory is designated as a possible cause.
Flight controllers with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland attempted to reboot the computer Monday (14/6), but were unsuccessful.
They are now in the process of transitioning to a spare memory unit. If the switch is successful, they will then test the telescope the day before restarting the science instruments and resuming astronomical observations.
Until then, telescope cameras and other equipment will remain in safe mode.
