NASA’s Curiosity Rover Sends A Rare Postcard From Mars To Celebrate Its 10th Anniversary

NASA’s Curiosity probe celebrates its 10th dayCommemorate its launch on November 26 by sending a magnificent postcard from the Red Planet. The rover took two black and white photos of the dramatic landscape of Mars as it perched on the side of Mount Sharp. NASA scientists combined the two images and added color to them, then shared the composite image on the space agency’s Instagram account. In a statement, NASA said the Curiosity rover was “thinking about you” and sent this postcard. “Staying in touch with loved ones is important,” he added.

Usually, curiosity, which launched exactly 10 years ago in 2011, captures a 360-degree view of its surroundings with its navigation camera, before sending panoramic images back to Earth. These images are usually sent in a low-quality compressed format that is easy to send to Earth.

But this time it was different. When the team behind the rover saw the view in front of Mount Sharp, a mountain 5 kilometers high, they decided to take the highest quality picture possible.

NASA In the caption, he said that the beauty of the landscape was so inspiring that the mission team “decided to add a bit of flair” by combining photos taken at two different times of the day and adding color to create a rare postcard.

Separately, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which is leading the Curiosity mission, said in a statement: statement Those blue, orange, and green colors are not what the human eye sees. Instead, they represent the landscape as seen at different times of the day. Elements of the morning scene are depicted in blue, the evening scene in orange, and a mixture of the two in green.

Mount Sharp is located within Gale Crater, a 154 km wide basin formed by an ancient impact. The far edge of Gale Crater is visible on the horizon.
