WASHINGTON — The U.S. House and Senate have finalized a draft omnibus spending budget for fiscal year 2022. They will give NASA $24 billion and $760 million below the government budget. If converted into rupiah, the US Space Agency’s budget for this year is IDR 354 trillion.

The spending bill, which funds the federal government for the fiscal year beginning on October 1, provides NASA with $24.041 billion. Meanwhile, NASA asked for 24.8 billion US dollars. Although not in accordance with the request, the budget is bigger than last year’s 23.271 billion US dollars.

The biggest cuts occurred at NASA’s space technology directorate. The government asked for $1.425 billion for NASA’s space technology, but the omnibus bill only funds it at $1.1 billion, the same amount as in 2021. The omnibus also directs $110 million of that funding for the development of nuclear thermal propulsion, which was not included in the proposal. administration.

Budgets for science programs were also cut $317 million compared to demand. Even so, the overall funding for science is still $300 million more than in 2021.

The report accompanying the bill provides mixed messages about NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). It was an aerial observatory that NASA wanted to cancel in the request.

The Omnibus Bill provides $1.195 billion for NASA’s Human Landing System (HLS) program. It was SpaceX’s version of the Starship SpaceX lunar landing vehicle development program for Mission Artemis 3 and other possible future missions. The amount of the budget is as requested by NASA.

The bill also provides for full funding, $101.1 million for NASA’s commercial low Earth orbit (LEO) development efforts. The program is to support work on the commercial space station that will replace the International Space Station (ISS) by the end of the decade. Note that NASA will use commercial space stations once the ISS is decommissioned in 2031.

Furthermore, the DPR will immediately vote on the March 9 omnibus spending bill to be passed. Here are the details:
