NASA znovu navázala kontakt se sondou Voyager 2, která se nachází ve vzdálenosti 19 miliard kilometrů od Země. Původně se očekávalo, že se spojení s touto sondou podaří obnovit v červnu, kdy měl proběhnout automatický restart systému. Nakonec se však díky velmi silnému signálu podařilo anténě sondy opět zaměřit směrem k Zemi a obnovit komunikaci.
Zařízení agentury Deep Space Network v australském Canberru vyslalo na Voyager 2 signál o vzdálenosti více než 19,9 miliardy kilometrů a dalo sondě pokyn, aby se přeorientovala a otočila svou anténu zpět k Zemi. V pátek 4. srpna ve 12:29 EDT začala sonda vracet vědecká a telemetrická data, která naznačovala, že pracuje normálně a zůstává na předpokládané trajektorii, vysvětlila NASA.
Deep Space Network tvoří tři komplexy antén rozmístěných v USA, Španělsku a Austrálii, aby mohly komunikovat nepřetržitě bez ohledu na rotaci Země. Slouží k sledování vzdálených sond a komunikaci s nimi.
