The US space agency NASA announced that asteroid 139622 (2001 QQ142), which has a diameter of 1.2 km, will fly today, Wednesday, at a distance of 5.5 million km and could pose a danger to Earth.
The asteroid will approach Earth today (December 6) at 2100 UTC, where it will be separated from Earth by a distance of 0.036 astronomical units, which is equal to the average distance between Earth and the Sun, or a little more than 5.5 million kilometers.
It is known that astronomical objects that cross Earth’s orbit at a distance of up to 0.05 astronomical units, or less than 7.5 million kilometers, are considered dangerous.
According to scientists’ estimates, the diameter of asteroid 139622 (2001 QQ142) ranges between 540 and 1,200 meters, and its speed is 6.66 kilometers per second.
