“We hope that using our language for mission of persistence will inspire more of our Navajo youth to understand the importance and importance of learning our language. Our words were used to help win World War II, and now we help navigate and learn more about Mars. “
The team already has a list of 50 Navajo names, including “Strength” (“Bedzel”) and “Respect” (“He ł Nilo”). Persistence itself translates to “ha-ha-ha.”
NASA says the language must be “taught” to survive so it can recognize landmarks that have been classified as Navajo. The diacritics used in the English alphabet to express the unique intonation of the Navajo language cannot be read by the computer language used by persistence. The statement said the team used English letters without special letters or punctuation to represent Navajo words.
The team’s Navajo engineer, Aaron Yeezy, spoke of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
