NASA calls for volunteers to spend 8 months in isolation in Russia

The NASA launched a call to recruit six US citizensis that they are willing to live an eight-month period of isolation in what would be the replica of a spaceship. The experiment will be carried out in Russia – which requires being bilingual – and is intended to forgive between 30 and 55 years old with a university degree.

Those chosen for the study will be taken to Moscow, in search to analyze the physical and psychological effects that can produce a closure of this type, in the face of future space explorations planned by the aerospace agency to the Moon and, later, to Mars, in the framework of its Artemisa project.

The requirements to register, according to the official publicationare: being a US citizen “highly motivated”, being between 30 and 55 years old, fluent in Russian and English and having a university diploma, with graduate preferences, whether it’s a master’s degree, a doctorate, or a completed career as a military officer.

However, the amount to be paid to those willing to go through the study was not specified, but they anticipated that there will be “different levels of compensation”, which will depend on the type of contracts the agency offers. There’s also no start date for launching their missions to Mars.

Something similar to this experience is the one experienced by astronauts who send NASA and other space agencies each year to the International Space Station (ISS). The difference is that this station is larger than the ships that, in the future, are expected to travel the distance between Earth and Mars.

In this regard, the agency noted that the research will be used to “study the effects of isolation and confinement as participants work to successfully complete their simulated space mission.” It also helps the agency prepare for the challenges of space exploration and how problems associated with it can be resolved.

In addition to a distant expedition to Mars -with no established date-, the idea of NASA through its Artemis program is to return to the Moon with humans by 2024, although these plans may be disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic Fox News reported.
