Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Since mid-2022, forests in eastern Kalimantan have reportedly experienced rapid changes due to the development of the IKN or Indonesian Capital City. Roads were laid and buildings erected near Balikpapan Bay in East Kalimantan.

The new capital on the island of Kalimantan was built to answer the environmental challenges facing Jakarta, the current capital of Indonesia.

The Jakarta metropolitan area is home to 30 million people and has grown rapidly in recent decades. Frequent flooding, heavy traffic, air pollution and lack of drinking water are common occurrences in Jakarta.

It is also rumored that Jakarta will sink in the next few years. Excessive groundwater extraction has contributed to land subsidence rates of up to 15 centimeters per year, and 40 percent of the city is now below sea level.

In 2019, the President of Indonesia announced that the country’s administrative center would be moved from the densely populated island of Java to the less densely populated island of Kalimantan.

IKN construction will begin in July 2022 in a forest and oil palm plantation area 30 kilometers inland from the Makassar Strait.

The images released by NASA’s Earth Observatory show photos of IKN in April 2022 and February 2024. They were captured respectively by OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 and OLI on Landsat 8.

In the 2024 picture, you can see that a lot of land in the forest has been cleared to be built into a main road. The initial phase of development involved the construction of government facilities and other buildings for an initial population estimated at 500,000 people.

The project plan stipulates that IKN will be a green, walkable metropolis, powered by renewable energy with 75 percent of the city still being forest.

But on the one hand, some researchers worry that this change in land use could endanger forests and wildlife in the region.

The stretches of land and coastal waters that are being developed are rich in biodiversity and home to mangrove forests, proboscis monkeys and Irrawaddy dolphins.

Although the location has changed a lot over the past year and a half, the city is far from finished. Construction is planned to be completed in 2045.
