Napoli made good business Wednesday in Ajax’s Champions League group. After a real shower of penalties, the Italian club won 0-3 against Rangers FC from coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
After Rangers FC had good first-half chances in the first half, fireworks went off at Ibrox Stadium in the second half. Rangers defender James Sands pulled the emergency brake on a broken Napoli player in the 56th minute and had to pay him with his second yellow card of the match and a penalty for Napoli.
Then there were spectacular minutes in Glasgow. Piotr Zielinski’s shot from 11 meters was won by 40-year-old Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor, but Matteo Politano still scored on the rebound.
However, the penalty had to be resumed, because Politano recovered too soon. Zielinski went behind the ball again and once again his effort was reversed by McGregor. This time he didn’t allow a rebound.
Not long after, things turned bad again for the ten of Rangers FC. Napoli received another penalty after Khvicha Kvaratskelia threw the ball into Borna Barisic’s hand from close range. This time Politano took the penalty and did not fail from 11 yards. Five minutes from time Giacomo Raspadori scored the 0-2, after which Tanguy Ndombele determined the final score of 0-3 in injury time.
Due to the win, Napoli are further away from Liverpool and Ajax. The two-time national champion struggled last week with a 4-1 win over Liverpool and has three points more than “The Reds”, who won 2-1 against Ajax on Tuesday. The Amsterdam side were previously 4-0 too strong for Rangers FC, who are at zero at the bottom. Ajax will play a home match against Napoli on 4 October.
