Nancy Pelosi: Where does the political scientist come from?

Nancy Pelosi, born Nancy Patricia D’Alesandro, was born on March 26 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Already her father Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. was politically active. He had represented the city of Baltimore in Congress for five terms and then served as mayor for 12 years. Pelosi’s brother, Thomas D’Alesando III, was also mayor of Baltimore.

Nancy Pelosi studied political science at Trinity College in Washington, DC and graduated in 1962.

In 1969 Nancy Pelosi began working in San Francisco as a volunteer organizer for the Democrats. In the years that followed, she rose through the ranks of the party. During this time, Nancy Pelosi became friends with United States Representative Phil Burton, who represented San Francisco in the House of Representatives, and his wife Sala Burton. In 1983 Phil Burton died and his wife took over. Four years later, Sala Burton, who had previously asked Nancy Pelosi to run for her seat after her death, also died. Pelosi was elected to the House of Representatives in a by-election that was narrowly won in 1987. In 1988 Pelosi was re-elected full time.

In 2003 Pelosi was elected minority leader by the House of Democratic Representatives, becoming the first woman to lead a party in Congress. In 1963 Nancy D’Alesandro married Paul Pelosi and moved to San Francisco with him and their five children in 1969. Today Nancy and Paul Pelosi have nine grandchildren in addition to five adult children. Her daughter Christine Pelosi is also politically active.
