Sun, music, fresh drinks and a cool outfit: it’s the dream combination for a successful day on the festival meadow. For the former we count on the weather gods, with the latter our fashion editor David Devriendt lends a hand. Whether you’re going to dance at Rock Werchter, Paradise City, Dour Festival, Tomorrowland, Pukkelpop or WECANDANCE: you can score anywhere with these trends. Even after the festivals.
–
“Festival fashion is always a bit more naked, more striking and more challenging than the clothes we wear in normal life”, Devriendt begins. “That makes the meadow the perfect place to experiment with a stunner of an outfit. Yet nowadays we increasingly wear festival clothing in daily life: it already dominates the streets.”
–
“Fashion is more fun today. The seventies, nineties and the millennium are in and you can mix and match with the elements you like. That makes fashion today unique: everyone can do their own thing.” This summer we will look further for style advice grannies on the coast, ballerina’s in Barbie† You will see the trends below at every festival, but you can still wear them after the party is over.
–
1. Short, shorter, shortest
“This trend stems from the body positivity movement and the bare-belly hype† Extremely short tops or bikini tops with a cami over: we used to only wear them at festivals, today they are full-fledged outfits. Bras or bikini tops with ropes or fringes on them: they are not great for an even tan, but they are perfect for festivals.”

2. Cowboy boots
“The western trend has made a comeback,” continues Devriendt. “Those typical cowboy boots are everywhere again. I went to the cinema yesterday and there alone I saw five different girls wearing a pair. I predict that you will see them everywhere on the festival grounds, in classic brown or in crazy shades, such as red and blue. I also see a lot of white bones or boots with fringes.”

5. See-through dresses
“You wouldn’t immediately walk around with it on the street, but on the meadow you are guaranteed to score: a transparent dress combined with a top, bikini or (in the case of Vanessa Hudgens) a bathing suit underneath. Layering over each other is a particularly big trend this summer. It looks fresh, airy and sexy.”

6. Y2K
“The Y2K Style (from around the 2000s, ed.) remains a huge trend. Think: wide-leg parachute pants, maxi skirts and busy gothic-style tops. If you think those items are too special to wear on a normal Tuesday, then the festival meadow is the perfect place to experiment with them.”
