Naked Energy files for bankruptcy | Financial

According to regulator ACM, Naked Energy has run into financial problems because it had the purchase of energy carried out by Anode subsidiary Energie I&V. That company went under at the beginning of this month.

Anode also purchased energy for other small suppliers. Sepa Green Energy previously went bankrupt due to the bankruptcy of this buyer.

cold shower

Naked Energy customers are placed with another energy supplier. A cold shower is that they are expected to pay high advances with their new provider due to the current record prices for gas and electricity.

The price for gas in Europe reached a new high this week and is now more than eight times higher than a year ago. This is partly due to the harsh winter at the beginning of 2021 and the relatively low gas reserves thereafter. China is also importing significantly more liquefied natural gas for the industry to catch up after the corona crisis.

At the same time, supplies from Russia to Europe are not enough to counteract the scarcity. The price explosion also affects the costs of electricity, which is still largely generated with natural gas. Small energy suppliers in particular are having a hard time as a result, because they have fewer resources to cover the risks of price increases.

Series of bankruptcies

As a result, the energy market is currently experiencing a series of bankruptcies. Naked Energy is the sixth Dutch energy supplier to collapse due to the sharp rise in energy prices. Previously, Welkom Energie, Enstroga and Fenor also fell over. In addition, Allure Energie went bankrupt, because a conflict between the shareholders made the supply of gas and electricity uncertain.

In the meantime, ACM warns that heat suppliers should not increase their rates unnecessarily. For next year, the regulator has imposed a maximum rate increase of 67% on suppliers of district heating, among other things. Households that are connected to this cannot switch to another heat supplier and have been complaining about huge price increases for years.
