Nak-yeon Lee “The Democratic Party has lost its value and dignity… There is an urgent need to implement a multi-party system and reform major political parties”

Lee Nak-yeon, former leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, strongly criticized the main opposition Democratic Party, saying, “The main opposition Democratic Party has lost the values and dignity it has maintained for a long time,” and “violent words and actions of hostility and hatred toward both inside and outside are rampant.”

In his keynote speech today at the academic forum “Beyond the crisis in Korea, to a new path” by the think tank “Solidarity and Symbiosis” in the conference room of the Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, former representative Lee said, “The Democratic Party has been making use of its own self-reliance and resilience for a long time, but these days, “That’s not true,” he said.

He continued, “In the past, the Democratic Party’s immune system of internal diversity and democracy worked to filter out various problems and restore health,” and pointed out, “But now, that immune system has collapsed due to the influence of leadership and strong supporters.”

He continued, “As a result, the Democratic Party’s moral sensibilities have become dulled and the hearts of the people have become dull,” and “the activities in presenting policies and visions have become weak, and even when policies are introduced, they are often overshadowed by judicial issues.”

Former representative Lee also said, “In politics, we must overcome political polarization caused by large political parties that are neither moral nor capable,” and suggested revitalizing democracy within the party, implementing a multi-party system, and internal innovation in large political parties as the answer.

In particular, ″To that end, what we must do right away is to maintain a semi-linked proportional representation system on the premise of abandoning satellite parties,″ he said. ″The parallel system, which the two major parties are known to have agreed to in order to monopolize seats, will exacerbate the harmful effects of political polarization.” emphasized.

Former Representative Lee criticized the Yoon Seok-yeol government, saying, “It will be recorded as the worst government since democratization in 1987.”

He then pointed out, “President Yoon Seok-yeol must change,” and added, “Above all, I recommend that you talk less and listen more.”

He also added, “There is a need to replace the President’s Office and the Cabinet with people with balanced insight and experience,” and added, “If thin-minded and biased personnel occupy key positions as they have so far, state affairs are bound to become crooked.”
