Nadiem: Distance Learning Will Become Permanent Later

The middle schoolers are preparing the PJJ curriculum and learning modules.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Nadiem Anwar Makarim said distance learning (PJJ) could be applied permanently after the Covid-19 pandemic. At present, the Ministry of Education and Culture is preparing the PJJ curriculum and learning modules.

“PJJ will become permanent, not only during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Nadiem said in a working meeting with Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Thursday (2/7).

Nadiem explained that the use of technology will be fundamental to learning. The implementation is not only PJJ, but also hybrid models. The use of technology provides an opportunity for schools to engage in a variety of learning activities.

Nadiem said the Covid-19 pandemic had provided opportunities for education to carry out various kinds of efficiency and technology. Although the application is currently experiencing many shortcomings, such as teacher skills to infrastructure, such as the availability of the internet and electricity.

Nevertheless, he continued, both teachers and parents can adapt and experiment using technology for learning activities. At present, the Ministry of Education and Culture conducts curriculum formulation through PJJ assessment.

The curriculum is structured taking into account the simplification of learning and focus on aspects of literacy, numeracy, and character education. A team from the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Balitbang, is preparing the curriculum.

In addition to the PJJ curriculum, he continued, the Ministry of Education and Culture also prepared a learning module. With this module, students can study at home independently. The module also helps teachers do PJJ. The Ministry of Education and Culture has also developed modules for parents to assist their children in learning.

“So there is a special team in our Balitbang (Research and Development) team that is formulating how we reformat or make various changes to our curriculum and assessment during this PJJ period,” Nadiem said.

One of the provinces that is still extending PJJ is DKI Jakarta. DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan confirmed the start of the new school year in Jakarta on July 13, 2020 by continuing to carry out teaching and learning activities from home and not face to face in school.

“In relation to schools there will be no plans to open schools, we are still monitoring the progress of the outbreak,” he said Anies in a press conference at City Hall, Wednesday (1/7).

According to Anies, the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of DKI Jakarta has conducted an evaluation during the phase 1 large-scale Social Limitation (PSBB) transition. As a result, children are still very vulnerable to contracting Covid-19.

“With this condition the school will not be opened even though the school year will start on July 13 but it still starts inside distance learning so now we are beginning of the new year still at home, “explained Anies.
