Nabu Casa Hires Developer for Offline Voice Control in Home Assistant – Sound and Vision – New

This is good news, Rhasspy works very well and offers unmatched customization.

The downside is that it can’t currently do anything out of the box, but with a little tweaking you can add any command imaginable.
Want to read the news? Program a voice command to transfer an M3U stream to your home media player.
Rain notification? TTS to the speaker asking if you want to close the skylights, then wait for confirmation via Rhasspy.

The advantage is that you can install the recognition engine separately from the receiving (satellite) station. Then you can host the engine on a fast PC or VPS and a simple raspberry pi (zero) or even ESP32 as receiver/transmitter in room with microphone and loudspeaker. The respeaker is popular as a microphone, but a good alternative is USB speakers which are often used for VoIP meetings.

All locally without your data being sent to the cloud, like with mycroft.

Development seemed to have stalled for a while and no updates were forthcoming, so this news is very welcome.
