Molecular biologist Ahmad Rusdan Handoyo Utomo, PhD, explained that the Corona mutations in Indonesia are generally the same as in Wuhan. However, there are a few percent whose Corona mutation is the same as the version in Europe and that was recently discovered in Malaysia, namely the mutation ‘G’ or D614G.
“Indonesia actually has the most version D. Version G or D614G is probably around 20 percent,” said Ahmad as quoted from detikcom, Saturday (22/8/2020).
But Ahmad emphasized that the data could not represent all Corona case data in Indonesia. Only dozens of new samples were sequenced or genome sequenced.
“The samples that were sequenced also did not arrive at 20, and of the 20 or so, about a fifth of the G version, but the majority of them from Indo are still originally from Wuhan,” he explained.
Even so, Ahmad emphasized, until now there is no evidence that the Corona mutation causes infected patients to experience more severe symptoms or that the Corona mutation is confirmed to be more contagious.
“Well, if you look at it, we actually have no evidence that it can be faster or slower, or more virulent in the sense that the symptoms are more severe or mild,” he concluded.
