Musée d’Orsay Loans Two Impressionist Paintings for 150th Anniversary Exhibition

1 Two loans from the Musée d’Orsay

“The Balcony” by Édouard Manet, whose green tones were shocking at the end of the 19th century.

The most spectacular event this year is perhaps the loan of two impressionist paintings from the Musée d’Orsay. From March 6 to June 10, “Le Balcon” by Édouard Manet (1868-69) and “La Cabane des douaniers” (1882) by Claude Monet will be visible in the north wing, now called the Rosa Bonheur wing. These two loans are part of the 150th anniversary of the exhibition that launched the Impressionist movement in 1874.

“The Customs Cabin”, with which Claude Monet inaugurated his approach to serial paintings.

At the time, “The Balcony” was shocking with its dominant green colors, which did not conform to popular aesthetic canons, while “The Customs Cabin” inaugurated the process of serial paintings, in which Monet painted the same subject at different times. of the day in order to capture the changes in atmosphere. This painting was until now in storage at the Customs Museum, currently closed for work. In addition, the Museum of Fine Arts will exhibit its pre- and post-Impressionist collections, including paintings by Corot, Renoir and Berthe Morisot, who appears on “Le Balcon”

2 New clash in the north wing

The dismantling of the Denis Monfleur exhibition is an opportunity to resume the hangings in the north wing, giving more space to 20th century art. This space is now divided into two sections, one devoted to realist painters and sculptors, until the 1940s; the other, for “formal experiments” (expressionism, cubism), in a room which is due to open in March.

Works by Picasso, Dorignac, Roganeau and Zadkine are grouped together in the Rosa Bonheur wing.

There we find, among others, paintings by Picasso, Lhote or Vlaminck, or sculptures by Rivière or Zadkine. This new display also allows us to highlight the collection bequeathed by the art historian Robert Coustet, with works by Marquet, Schnegg and Roganeau. And to present the museum’s new acquisitions, including two drawings by Jean Dupas (read below).

3 A Valérie Belin exhibition

Michael Jackson photographed by Valérie Belin, a photo to see between April 24 and October 28.

Valérie Belin

The Bordeaux public was able to discover Valérie Belin during an exhibition at the Bernard Magrez Institute; he will rediscover this personality of visual photography in an exhibition which will look back on more than thirty years of work, between the museum and the Fine Arts gallery. It will be between April 24 and October 28.

“Confessions of the lovelorn”, superposition of photo and drawing, in the heritage of pop art or the avant-gardes of the interwar period.

Valérie Belin

This artist born in 1964, and whose works can be found at the Cartier Foundation or at the Victoria & Albert Hall in London, first worked in black and white, “treating living beings as objects and objects as beings alive,” analyzes Sophie Barthélémy, director of the Museum of Fine Arts. In 2006 she moved to digital and color, superimposing her photos on already printed backgrounds, in the heritage of pop art or the avant-gardes of the interwar period. These two parts of his work will be presented through around a hundred prints.

4 A Night of Drawing

Finally, a big premiere on February 8: a Drawing Night will be offered from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Participants will be able to reproduce 19th and 20th century paintings from the Rosa Bonheur wing, or draw from live models: in this case the students of the Artothem association from Bordeaux Montaigne University. Entrance will be free, without reservation, and drawing materials may be loaned.
