In October 2022, Prigozhin allegedly called Putin and rudely complained about the lack of ammunition in the war in Ukraine. Patrushev was also in Putin’s office at that time, and he believed that Prigozhin had become dangerous for the Kremlin.

He has repeatedly warned Putin that betting on Prigozhin and his fighters in Ukraine gives him too much political and military influence that threatens the Kremlin.

During Prigozhin’s uprising in June 2023, Patrushev “took control,” the publication’s sources claim. Patrushev planned that if Prigozhin could not be stopped, the Kazakh army would come to the Kremlin’s aid in gratitude for Russia’s help in suppressing the riots in January 2022, WSJ sources claim.

However, the President of Kazakhstan, Kasim Zomart Tokayev, reportedly refused to do so.

After the uprising, Putin was shown Patrushev’s plan to get rid of Prigozhin. The Russian dictator did not oppose it.

The publication, citing representatives of Western intelligence services and a former Russian intelligence officer, said that it took two months to prepare the assassination of Prigozhin. The assassination plan was approved by Patrushev himself.
