As in previous years, the municipality of Heerlen will commemorate World AIDS Day on Wednesday 1 December. The municipality does this by hanging red ribbons – the symbol of International World AIDS Day – in the city center.

“There are still many prejudices about HIV and people living with HIV,” the municipality said on its website. HIV does not discriminate. Anyone can get HIV. If you get yourself tested on time, you can grow old healthy with the right medication.
Heerlen supports initiatives to increase awareness about HIV and therefore works together with the GGD South Limburg to promote sexual health.
