Municipality of Gorinchem is obliged to receive asylum seekers | Inland

Mayor Reinie Melissant van Gorinchem received a call from the State Secretary last night. “She called to say that we are getting an indication for acute emergency reception for asylum seekers. That fell raw on my roof,” says Melissant. She would have preferred that municipalities that have never taken their responsibility in the reception of asylum seekers were given an indication. “We are already doing a lot. Then give the tens, hundreds of municipalities that do nothing a clue.”

According to Broekers-Knol, an acute emergency threatens due to a shortage of reception places for asylum seekers. Talks are underway between the Ministry of Justice and municipalities about the compulsory reception of asylum seekers. According to insiders, the process is still ongoing, and it should be officially announced next week which municipalities, in addition to Gorinchem, will be designated.
