The crime journalist was shot in the street in the center of Amsterdam on July 6 and died of his injuries more than a week later. Soon a sea of ​​flowers arose on the sidewalk, and crush barriers were placed.

When it was announced on Thursday 15 July that De Vries had passed away, people laid down even more flowers. People also left behind many drawings, photos, stuffed animals, balloons, Ajax scarves and flags.
