Municipal municipalities’ second round in Bastia: fog over the city

Uncertainties, always, on the feasibility of the port of Carbonite or on the modernization of the current port, flagship file of the city supposed to revive the economy. The candidates of the second round clash in partisan quarrels and move away from the bottom without gaining height

An unprecedented campaign, reformatted in a sanitary parenthesis, robbed by “small business”, and the malicious surge of social networks, which sees three candidates compete in the last sprint on the defensive. Will the voters find their way in these little manly battles that divert politics, the real, from the essential?

Because it does not only take a mayor for Bastia, we must give the city a decision-maker, a wise manager and beyond, an ambition, an energy that will allow us to meet the challenges of tomorrow, and above all to face tomorrow smiling about the health crisis.

This great debate in the second round was aimed at clarifying opinion on the strategy that the future magistrate will adopt to revive the economy of the city while supporting the fragile public. At this stage, ten days before the election, speeches are still not audible and positions are not clear cut.

Port de la Carbonite: a project at anchor

The example of the port of Carbonite is revealing: this flagship project supposed to respond to the security and economic emergencies of the city continues to divide. However, time is pressing, this structuring equipment may remain in the boxes for a long time, delaying the implementation of the other option, the modernization of the existing port. Fifteen years of procrastination against a backdrop of political and economic quarrels blurs the Bastia’s vision of the coming decades.

About a hundred meters away, this is the status quo. If Pierre Savelli (Bastia stronger together) advocates for further studies and the alternative Portu Novu, Jean-Sébastien de Casalta (Unione per Bastia) and Julien Morganti (A future for Bastia), yet in favor of this Carbonite realization, have not been able to get closer on this major issue. It is unfortunate that ego quarrels always prevail over compelling issues.

Lack of readability

Whoever he is, the elected mayor must be combative against the Collectivity of Corsica so that the city, downgraded, lagging behind Ajaccio, regains its influence. Without a port entry gate at the height, tourist and commercial activities will remain sluggish. So yes, the three candidates agree on the need to invest in major works to “Restart the machine”. But on this point, the lack of legibility is striking and the financial room for maneuver very uncertain because of the economic situation.

Jean-Sébastien de Casalta has also pointed “Less investment during the past six years compared to the mandate of Emile Zuccarelli”. Pierre Savelli retorts “That the City has invested 100 million euros against only 5 million euros for the CAB”.

Reading the programs, uncertainties remain about their feasibility and their timeliness. Julien Morganti, whose 140 proposals are judged “Impracticable” by his opponents, hammers for his part: “It is the sense of the State and the communities to invest and to go into debt. “ If elected, will it be followed by the funders? The slogan “Jean-Sé … Jean-Sé’rien”, of which he is very proud, is however not far from sticking to all. The arrow aimed at the leader of Union per Bastia hit more than one target.

A polluted debate

Beyond the formulas, the Bastiais expect strong acts, achievements and transformations for a better life. They will not be satisfied with remakes of the pending files,
driven under the old mandates. Parking, traffic, housing, equipment, commercial and tourist attractiveness, everything remains to be invented.

As is often the case, the imagination unfolds in the service of political strategies and combinations. The outgoing mayor has chosen to renew his 2014 vows while maintaining the balance that led the nationalist majority to victory. Once again, outstretched hands were pushed back or ignored. Some waited for a sign that never came.

In the ranks of Jean-Sébastien de Casalta, even before the first lap, there was a perfume of alliance. The progressives and the liberals ended up agreeing to make weight in the campaign without the Communists who slammed the door.
Regarding the youngest of the election, the binder did not take, and he will have lost in the process some supporters.

While the ballot is very close, that the dice are thrown, the campaign gets bogged down paving the way for abstentionism. Voters will elect a mayor, a man more surely than a program.
