Details: It is reported that the Iranians crossed the border in the area between Nuijamaa and Jouseno, near Lappeenranta, on the Karelian Isthmus. The men arrived as a group and asked for asylum together.

The deputy head of the south-eastern department of the border service, Heikki Ahtiainen, said that in a conversation with migrants it became known about an “assistant” from the Russian side who helped them cross the border. Specific details about this person are not yet known.

He added that at this stage he refrains from suspecting that the Russian side contributed to the arrival of migrants.

“There are many factors behind this phenomenon… We don’t yet know who is behind this,” Ahtiainen commented.

The official added that residents of border villages have no reason to worry about their safety and the situation is under control.

The Border Service reported that they contacted the Russian side and agreed on a meeting to thoroughly clarify the details of the incident. Representatives of the border guards of both countries met on Thursday evening.

Let us remind you that the previous such incident – the first in a long time – occurred on Wednesday morning 80 km to the north, in the area of the village of Parikkala. Then four asylum seekers crossed the border undetected. Border guards learned about them from local residents whose windows the migrants knocked on.

These two cases were a new development on the Russian-Finnish border. Previously, asylum seekers arrived at the Finnish border only through checkpoints on bicycles, until Finland decided to close them.

Let us remind you: As you know, on Friday morning the government once again extended the closure period all checkpoints on the border with Russia until February 11.
