Multiple Animal Neglect Incidents in Echt-Susteren Lead to Massive Removals of Dogs, Cats, Horses, and Chickens

Feb 1, 2024 at 9:19 AM Update: an hour ago

This week, the National Animal Welfare Inspection Service (LID) removed several dogs, cats, ponies and chickens from a home in the Limburg municipality of Echt-Susteren. The owner made a mistake before and has been under a magnifying glass during the inspection for years.

The LID found several dogs and cats in the seriously contaminated home. The inspection came across neglected chickens, ponies and a foal in dilapidated barns on the property. The horses and ponies in adjacent pastures were also in poor condition.

All animals were taken to shelters for medical care. A report has been drawn up against the owner for neglect. And that is not the first time.

The woman also made a mistake in 2021. Even then, several dogs, cats, chickens, horses and ponies had to be removed.

The judge imposed a restraining order on the woman, but this did not take effect due to an appeal. The rules have been tightened this year, meaning that an appeal no longer has a suspensive effect. The LID is happy with that change.

“People who make mistakes several times regularly have a collecting frenzy. These people often fall back into old habits,” a LID spokesperson told NU.nl. “Nowadays, a much longer ban on keeping animals can also be imposed, up to lifelong.”

Animals removed this week

  • More than sixty dogs
  • More than twenty cats
  • Ten horses and ponies
  • Nearly fifty chickens
  • A quail

There was also an incident in the same municipality last summer

Because the woman in Echt-Susteren has made several mistakes, the spokesperson says it is “extremely unlikely” that the animals taken from there will return. The animals are expected to be released by the shelters and placed elsewhere.

Last August it was also hit in the same municipality, but at a different home. There, the LID rescued 51 dogs, 9 hairless cats and a parrot.
