‘Multiplayer’ tags on Steam store pages Dark Souls games have been removed – Gaming – News

The Dark Souls games, which temporarily lost their multiplayer functionalities after an rce exploit was publicized, do not seem to be getting them back for the time being. Publisher Bandai Namco has removed “multiplayer” from the list of features of those games on Steam.

Save the change Dark Souls, Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls II in Dark Souls III† Only the tag ‘single-player’ remains. For comparison is at Elden Ring you can see the mention of ‘online pvp’ and ‘online co-op’, while the multiplayer elements of the Dark Souls games are extremely similar. This is not about the so-called user-defined tags† Sekiro is an exception: it never had these multiplayer elements. Although the multiplayer tags are gone, there is still talk about cooperative play, invasions and leave messages in the descriptions of the games.

It is not entirely clear when the change was implemented. The Outer Haven meldde the change of the week, but already noted that the store pages cannot be found on archive.org due to Steams age gate† What is clear, besides the similarities to Elden Ring, which does have the tags, is that SteamDB has taken over the tags. All four from games according to that site have multiplayer, while the content of that site comes from Steam itself via data mining. Tweakers has asked the SteamDB founder if he can provide more information.

Bandai Namco did not provide a concrete timeline for when multiplayer will return to the Dark Souls games. The only indication was ‘after the release of Elden Ring’. At the time of writing, that was a month and a half ago. Removing the tags gives little hope of a quick fix of the problems.

The multiplayer functions for the PC games have been offline since Januarybecause there is a remote code executionvulnerability was found in Dark Souls III. Due to the similarities in the multiplayer code, the servers for that game, for Dark Souls and its remaster, and for Dark Souls II were also disabled. With the rce exploit, a hacker managed to open a PowerShell window on a streamer’s computer and have text read aloud using Windows’ text-to-speech feature. After exploiting the vulnerability, attackers can exploit other exploits on the target’s computer.

The community-developed Blue Sentinel anti-cheat tool had a fix for the vulnerability in about a day. Blue Sentinel closes multiple security holes in the game, including vulnerabilities reported to Bandai Namco and FromSoftware years ago. According to the community, the publisher and developer are not active in plugging these kinds of holes. The online parts of the console counterparts of these games are still up and running.
