MTA Offers 50% Subsidy for Low-Income New Yorkers on MetroCard: Registration Events at Various Stations

One of the big complaints that New York City subway users constantly express every time they they enter the transportation system without paying, is that they do not have enough income to cover the cost of the ticket. And with the intention of reminding New Yorkers that since 2019, New York City approved a 50% subsidy For low-income passengers, who can apply for the MetroCard at half price, the MTA is holding registration days at several stations in the city to help process the discount for those who qualify.

The initiative, which takes place once a month at different metro stops, and which was at the stations last week Atlantic Av-Barclays, Yankee Stadium, Terminal St. George, calle 74 Jackson Hts-Roosevelt y la calle 116 en Manhattan, aims to inform New Yorkers about the transportation assistance program and complete the registration process immediately.

This was stated by the presidente de la New York City Transit, Richard Daveywho highlighted that by giving eligible New Yorkers the possibility of traveling on the subway and bus system at half price, with that aid, which already benefits 327,000 passengers, There is relief and we move towards equity. However, it is estimated that 1 million people in the city qualify for the reduced MetroCard and the Access-A-Ride program.

“I want all eligible New Yorkers to benefit from the program, and to spread the word, we are proud to host the largest day of action in New York City to connect customers with the Fair Fares program in the subway stations in all five boroughs,” Davey said. “We will not rest until all customers know these programs exist, and I encourage all eligible New Yorkers to apply.”

Shanifah Rieara, Chief Customer Officer and senior advisor to la MTAjoined the call and recalled that in addition to taking advantage of the monthly registration sessions at the stations, the procedure can also be done through the Fair Rates internet portal and in offices in each county.

“We want to make sure every New Yorker who is eligible for a discounted fare knows the benefits available by connecting people to the right resources,” the MTA official said. “This is a very important message and I am proud of today’s collective cross-agency effort to provide information to New Yorkers living in low-income households on how to save on their transportation costs.”

This year the NYPD has increased operations against fare evaders at stations, which has left more than 1,700 arrests and 28,000 fines, Therefore, the call from municipal authorities and the MTA to those who do not have the resources to pay their tickets is to apply for the fare reduction program and obtain the MetroCard at half price.
