Mrs Den Tuinder had to wait eighty years, but now she still wins the first prize with her rebus

Maarten Steinkamp, director of the candy chain, personally traveled to Hoogvliet, that’s how he likes it. “Unique and heart-warming. For us this is really rare.”

Marketing Stunt?

Mrs. Den Tuinder likes to keep things, tidy up a bit and there he was, the 1940 rebus. “I thought it would be nice for Jamin’s archive. And what is a stamp of eighty cents?”, The scratchy lady laughs.

So it went a little differently. They were amazed at the head office of the originally Rotterdam candy giant. “At first I thought of a marketing stunt for a company,” says director Steinkamp. “But I called Mrs. Den Tuinder and she was real.”

The prices were not wrong in 1940: a radio device, a galvanized sewing machine, a bicycle and more. More than a thousand guilders in prizes, a very substantial amount for that time. But there would never be a winner. Until 3 March 2020.

Tube radio

Steinkamp and his staff knock on the door and find an overwhelmed Mrs. Den Tuinder. Which gets the authentic tube radio from 1940.

“Great looking at Marktplaats. It wasn’t easy. And we had it overhauled.” The radio has also been given a hip Jamin sauce in the original colors of the time.

When she has recovered a bit from the shock, Mrs. Den Tuinder gets pleasure in it and she sits down in her talking chair.

“We lived on the Brede Hilledijk in Rotterdam-Zuid and there you had a Jamin nearby. You bought an ice cream for a few cents. A good time.”

Old things

“I was cleaning up old things and then I came across this again. I thought: what an old sheet, should I throw it away? No, I will send it!”

“It has become a bit later than intended, but here is your well-deserved prize,” says director Steinkamp.

And Mrs. Den Tuinder is happy with it. “I am a real radio fool. I will use it. You will never forget this.”

And the solution of the past is also above water: “I also save C. Jamin vouchers, because they are papers of great value.”
